"The poorest, the weakest, the simplest child, is born for immortality. This value outweighs the entire material universe, no matter how small a mark this child makes on it. The tiniest infant owns a deathless intellect, and is as immortal as the Father of spirits. No one can tell what this child will become."

~ A Prebyterian Pastor who died in 1873

"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

My First Shadow Box

Jack's very first and very favorite book is this train book his Aunt Annie bought for him. He can sit and listen to you read it for hours (that is not an exaggeration!) We have had to hide it from him just to get a little break. We even sent it to grandmother's to live but somehow she snuck it back to our house.
Needless to say this book has taken quite a beating! Once the front cover was ripped off and he became confused when he would pick up the cover only to find the train cars weren't anywhere to be found, I knew I must preserve this for him somehow and quickly before anymore damage could take place. I attached the cover with a little tape and spent hours in Hobby Lobby looking for the perfect things to put in his box. (Did you know they had a whole train isle??? Go figure!)
I was the most excited about the train I found that said "Reading" on it. I must note that Santa has been instructed to bring Jack a new train book for Christmas otherwise this could have been a problem.
I didn't totally think the project through once it was complete, I was so proud of it I sat it up on my buffet to marvel at it for a while and then it happened.... my little conductor caught site of both his beloved book and his eyes got HUGE when he saw there was a NEW train in the box as well! Ooops!
I have a picture of him reading the book somewhere and as soon as I find it I will place it above the book for the final touch... As you have probably guessed I will not be able to display this shadow box I have become so proud of until Santa pulls through with a new one.
Thank you Aunt Annie for such a wonderful book, I believe this book sparked his love for both trains and books. He has learned so much from this little piece of literature, such as the word "cattle car", how to say "choo choo" along with "whoo whoo" (they are interchangeable based on his mood). He definitely knows when he sees a train whether it is coming by our house, or in a book, he knows all about Thomas, loves his train table and has (sadly) replaced his lovey (which was constantly in his hand) with a train car.
I love this memory we will always have and love the fact I was able to preserve it in such a special way.
